God prepared the world to receive an unimaginable and precious gift. God prepared the world to receive the gift of God's own love. God prepared the world to receive the Christ child. But when it came time for the world to receive God's gift, there was no room in the inn!
There should have been room, for the people of Israel had had plenty of time to get ready. For generations the prophets had foretold the coming of the Messiah. In this morning's first lesson, the prophet Isaiah provides what has become the most familiar of those prophecies. Isaiah had seen many disasters in his world - disasters which he knew were well deserved. But Isaiah had also received a vision from the Lord, in which he had become convinced that God's steadfast love would prevail. And so Isaiah accepted God's call to prophesy to the people of Israel that their burdens would soon be lifted and that the time had already come to be filled with joy. The Christian world has come to ascribe Isaiah's words to the Christ child - to the baby Jesus:
"For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grown continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore."
Isaiah told the people of Israel that they could anticipate with joy the gift that God was preparing for them. When it came time for this child to be born, there would be no room in the inn, but Isaiah found room in his heart to believe in God's vision and to proclaim that vision of God's gift of love to the people of Israel.
There was a young teenager named Mary. It was the custom in her time and culture for young people to have marriages arranged for them by their parents. And so Mary had become "betrothed" - had become engaged - to a man, whom she probably had not yet even met, much less dated. Then one day she received a very unexpected guest with some very unexpected news. An angel visited Mary and told her that she had been chosen by God to bear God's son - God's gift of the love to humankind. Well, Mary's response was understandable. She was flabbergasted! She couldn't believe it. After all, she wasn't yet married. She and her husband-to-be hadn't even yet met! But the angel told her that she had been chosen to participate in God's miraculous gift, and Mary responded without hesitation. She would do what God had asked her to do. She would participate in God's gift of love to the world. She would bear God's son. When it came time for the child to be born, there would be no room in the inn, but Mary found room in her heart for acceptance and obedience to God's plan for her life and for the world.
Joseph was the carpenter's son, who had become engaged to Mary. Perhaps the most notable thing we are told about Joseph was that he could trace his ancestry back to Zerubbabel - and beyond him to King David. But in addition to his important heritage, Joseph was a devout Jew and so he tried to live by Jewish law. And according to Jewish law, if a man discovered that his bride was not a virgin, he was not obliged to keep the marriage contract, and the bride-to-be would then be ostracized from the community. When Joseph learned that Mary was to bear a child, he had a very difficult decision to make. Under Jewish law, Joseph was no longer obligated to marry her; he was no longer required to have anything to do with her. But Joseph chose to continue the marriage plans and stay with Mary; Joseph chose to participate in God's gift of love to the world. When it came time for the child to be born, there would be no room in the inn, but Joseph found room in his heart for courage to do the right thing - to defy Jewish law, and participate in God's plan for his life and the world.
In today's Gospel an angel appears to a group of shepherds and tells them that the long-awaited Messiah has now been born. The angel announces:
"I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord."
But when the angel went on to tell the shepherds that they would find the "child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger" they began to think that the angel's message was absurd. They had expected the long-awaited messiah to be a king - to be born in splendor, surrounded by royalty. How could it be that the Messiah had been wrapped in bands of cloth and was born in a manager? And yet the shepherds, filled with both awe and curiosity, decided to go to Bethlehem to see for themselves. And when they saw the child, they began to glorify and praise "God for all that they had heard and seen." When it had come time for the child to be born, the shepherds discovered that there had been no room in the inn, but they found room in their hearts to believe in the Messiah's birth and to glorify and praise God for God's gift of love to them and to the world.
Today we celebrate these events. We celebrate God's gift of love to the world. We celebrate Christmas. And yet we are surrounded by tumultuous times that are not unlike what Isaiah faced in his day. The world is in turmoil. Nations are rising up against nations. There is poverty and hunger, disease and famine. The world is in a global economic and energy crisis. And for most parts of the world there is no room for Jesus.
When it came time for the Christ child to be born, there had been no room in the inn, but this morning may we find room in our hearts for Jesus - room in our hearts: to see God's vision for the world and to proclaim it - as did Isaiah; to hear and obey God's plan for our lives - as did Mary; to have courage to do the right thing , even if it means going against society - as did Joseph; to join the shepherds of old in awe and wonder for God's wonderful and wondrous gift of love for the world. And so on this Christmas morning, let us proclaim with the multitude of the heavenly host: Glory to God in the highest. Christ Jesus is born!!
