In appreciation and thanks for your special part in our marriage, please accept this gift from El Salvador. I received this from the Committee of Mothers of the disappeared and assassinated. This cross was handmade in Mariona Prison by one of the political prisoners. The political prisoners make these to remind the world they are faithful, even while imprisoned.

I have kept this note and the tiny thread cross in my prayer notebook all these years, and on this Wednesday in Holy Week it is a reminder of those many others who have endured a real "Holy Week" in times past, and those who continue, often in complete anonymity and obscurity, to suffer for the sake of conscience and for a more just and Christ-like world.
I have long since forgotten their last name, much less been in touch with them, but they are among the Company of Saints I have been privileged to know.
Collect for Wednesday in Holy Week:
Lord God, whose blessed Son our Savior gave his body to be whipped and his face to be spit upon: Give us grace to accept joyfully the sufferings of the present time, confident of the glory that shall be revealed; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
