One of my favorite New Yorker cartoons from years ago shows a man giving a speech at his retirement party, and he begins by saying: “I’ve learned a lot in the last 40 years. Unfortunately, most of it is about aluminum.”
..
Now I have nothing against aluminum! In fact, my dad worked for Reynolds Metals in his early career, selling aluminum wire and cable, and our basement was a veritable Fort Knox of complimentary Reynolds Wrap! But dad has always known that his life is about more than aluminum. So when he was faced with unemployment in the late 1960’s, and again in the 1970's, he kept his soul intact.
In what follows, I will be talking about some of the things that helped my dad keep his soul intact.
First, I’ll cover a few preliminary topics, and then I’ll offer some general concepts for understanding Spiritual Health and Unemployment.
..
Here’s a prayer For the Unemployed from The Book of Common Prayer, p. 824.
..
Heavenly Father, we remember before you those who suffer want and anxiety from lack of work. Guide the people of this land so to use our public and private wealth that all may find suitable and fulfilling employment, and receive just payment for their labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
