Dearly Beloved,
THE PRESCHOOL AUCTION IS UPON US!
It's almost here! This Saturday our fifth annual Preschool Auction begins at 6:00 pm, with our now legendary pig roast dinner, silent and live auctions, child care with pizza, extraordinary entertainment, and the best of company.
My office is the staging area for baskets and other auction items, including recent additions like an Italian Basket, enhanced by a Panini press; and Halloween and Breakfast Baskets, and a child's rocker! And an important clarification from the last Newsletter― Sis Lyon procured, but the Deerfield Park District donated, the exciting Golf Outing Package.
Did I hear someone say "Dom Perignon"? Yes, I did! Ron Martin purchased a bottle of Dom Perignon 2000 for our Wine Pull grand prize!
And Catherine provided this description from the bottle's notes: "'matured in the champagne cellars of Epernay for seven years to express its full personality.' The first nose is described as 'fresh, crystalline and sharp' and on the palate 'notes of aniseed and ginger linger on the skin of . . . pear and mango, more textured than ripe.' The finish is described as 'smooth, mellow and all-encompassing.' Wow! Kinda makes you want to throw back a glass, doesn't it?"
The Champagne retails for $209. All the Wine Pull chances will be $50, and it's first come, first choice. As of today, we have 30 excellent bottles to offer. But wait! There's more! Mary and Curt Keller have donated a bottle of 2003 Romitorio Di Santedame (Tenimenti Ruffino), valued at $70. So your chances of pulling an exceptional bottle have increased!
TICKET-LESS? NOT TO WORRY: Tickets will be available at the door.
WHY WE'RE HOLDING OUR PRESCHOOL AUCTION (Part 2)
Including this year's enrollment, our Preschool has served 61 students and 46 families, 9 from our parish and 37 from outside our parish― 2 of whom have become active at St. Gregory's; and we have awarded 7 scholarships for children who otherwise wouldn't have been able to attend.
AUCTION CHILD CARE REMINDER!
Children 10 years old and younger will be served snacks and pizza while enjoying many activities in the Nursery during the Auction. Children's tickets are $8.00 each. Please call Ida Butler in the Parish Office to make your reservation(s).
SUNDAY SCHOOL GOOD NEWS
Church School Coordinator Gretchen Bayer introduces one of our newest teachers, Caroline DiNardo, who is working with our 4th and 5th graders alongside Janet Foltz and Gretchen Bayer:
Caroline has been a resident of Deerfield and a member of St. Gregory's since 1972, most of her life. She is married to Rich DiNardo and has 3 children. Her hobbies include playing piano, swimming, and riding her bike with her kids. She helps plan and run her twin sons' den meetings and outings in Cub Scouts. She also enjoys singing in the church's choir. Before her kids were born, Caroline worked as a registered nurse in rehabilitation and discharge planning. She worked as a nurse for 9 years, and will one day return to this profession. She is honored to be asked to teach a Sunday school class and looks forward to teaching and sharing ideas with the students, as well as learning from them.
And look at Gretchen's breath-taking and evocative transformation of this second-floor classroom:
The sheer depth of talent in this parish is incredible!
Faithfully yours,

Mark your calendars! The pumpkins are arriving on October 9th at noon. There are pumpkin unloading and shift sign-up sheets on the table in the hallway opposite the church office. It is important to sign up with your telephone or mobile number so you can be notified of any last minute truck delays.

TROOP 50 HALLOWEEN COSTUME DRIVE
Boy Scout Troop 50 is collecting Halloween Costumes for the Boys and Girls Club and two homeless shelters in Chicago. These organizations put on a Halloween party for the children and are looking for 200+ costumes in sizes newborn to about 6th grade. Also, they are requesting "goodie bag favors" such as pencils, small toys, bubbles, etc. If you happen to have some leftover Halloween odds and ends from previous parties, this would be a good use for them. There will be a collection box in Founder's Hall, and the costumes are due by Oct. 13th.
